Antidepressants and Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder

چکیده
1579 Antidepressants and REM Sleep Behavior Disorder—Postuma et al INTRODUCTION REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by loss of the normal atonia of REM sleep, such that patients appear to act out their dreams.1 Behaviors include yelling, laughing or crying, complex voluntary movements, falling out of bed, and even violent behaviors with injury. RBD is not rare—the prevalence of severe and violent RBD is approximately 1/2002; milder forms may increase this estimate considerably. Most patients with RBD do not seek medical attention, and lack of awareness among physicians can exacerbate this under-recognition.1 RBD has received considerable recent attention because it is strongly associated with synuclein-mediated neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson disease (PD), dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy. Of special interest, RBD can predict these ANTIDEPRESSANTS AND REM SLEEP BEHAVIOR DISORDER

Antidepressants substantially affect basic REM sleep characteristics in narcolepsy-cataplexy patients.
OBJECTIVES Antidepressants substantially affect REM sleep characteristics and trigger manifestations of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in the general, non-narcoleptic, population. Antidepressants are also frequently administrated in an attempt to suppress cataplexy. We investigated the role of antidepressants in the development of RBD in narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) patients. PATIENTS/ME...

ATONIA OF SKELETAL MUSCLES IS ONE OF THE CARDINAL FEATURES OF RAPID EYE MOVEMENT (REM) SLEEP. Superimposed on this atonia is intermittent activity in both axial and limb muscles. REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by excessive motor activity during REM sleep with acting out of dreams.1 The diagnosis of RBD is made by the appearance of elevated submental electromyogram (EMG) tone...
متن کاملDuloxetine-induced rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder: a case report
BACKGROUND Tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been reported to induce the symptoms of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) or to exacerbate REM sleep without atonia. With this case report, we found an association between typical RBD and duloxetine, a serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor. CASE PRESENTATION We present a case of a 6...
متن کاملEffects of Antidepressants on Sleep
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The aim of this review article was to summarize recent publications on effects of antidepressants on sleep and to show that these effects not only depend on the kind of antidepressant drugs but are also related to the dose, the time of drug administration, and the duration of the treatment. RECENT FINDINGS Complaints of disrupted sleep are very common in patients suffering f...
متن کاملAntidepressants and REM sleep behavior disorder: isolated side effect or neurodegenerative signal?
OBJECTIVES Antidepressants, among the most commonly prescribed medications, trigger symptoms of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in up to 6% of users. Idiopathic RBD is a very strong prodromal marker of Parkinson disease and other synuclein-mediated neurodegenerative syndromes. It is therefore critically important to understand whether antidepressant-associated RBD is an independent pharmacolo...
